Krugman on Cap & Trade

The Great Paul Krugman points out in his column today that you can go a long way toward fighting global warming for $160 per year!  The average family would pay another $160 per year under the Waxman-Markey cap and trade bill.  Given the catastrophic results of the increases in extreme weather we’re facing, it’s a small price to pay.  And revising the tax code to benefit middle class families and push the top 5% to pay more would more than pay for it if you find $160 too unpalatable.

You’ll hear the same nuts popping off over this bill that you’ve heard pop off on health care, but the science is clear and this relatively modest proposal is one of the greatest long term investments we can make.

As for the so-called moderates in the Senate, remember that these are the same folks who voted for the Iraq war, lied about Obama’s health care proposals and only attempt to appear moderate because pollsters like Frank Luntz tell them they should pretend to support reform.  Pretending to support a solution in principle while watering it down to ineffectiveness in practice isn’t moderation, it’s demagoguery.
