Huffington Post Catalogues Reactions
The Huffington Post does a nice job encapsulating a number of reactions. Conservative David Frum’s is the most interesting since he takes on the reactionaries who now control the Republican Party. A moderate approach could have watered down the bill more, but the no-to-everything approach backfired, according to Frum.
The bill is seriously flawed for lacking a public option and Medicare for everyone is a superior solution, but the limits on the worst insurance industry abuses, subsidies for working families, and political victory that broke the dam to make other reforms possible make it worthy enough to merit passage. Now, it’s up to the Senate to make it better (hopefully, by Easter).
After that, Obama will focus on jobs and Wall Street reform through the end of the year. I doubt Democrats have enough fight left in them to take up The Employee Free Choice Act, campaign finance reform, and climate change legislation, but doing so would energize the base and allow them to maintain control of both houses of Congress. History is against the Democrats this November, but these are unusual times and, if they play their cards right, this could be a springboard to continued control of Congress and a second Obama term.
